Information For The Media

"With the closing of Agriculture Canada's Hardy Rose Breeding Program (Morden, Manitoba and St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec), it has been left to independent rose breeders in Canada to carry the torch."

General Press Information

The Canadian Artists Rose Consortium came together to preserve the collection of hardy roses from Agriculture Canada's breeding program. The Consortium is comprised of breeders and growers who have invested money, time and patience towards the development of a selection of hardy roses which are able to grow in the varied climates across Canada.

Felix Leclerc, named in honour of the well-known Quebec singer-songwriter and poet, is a climbing rose with bright electric-pink flowers. This amazing plant covers itself in a solid brushstroke of pink from the beginning of July right through until frost, an amazing feat for any rose variety!

Emily Carr was noted for her portrayal of the simplistic lifestyle of the Haidas of Vancouver Island. Her vivid, flowing paintings depicted more than just totem poles and nature; they embodied her vision of the flow of nature surrounding us. This outstanding hardy three foot rose has deep dark red flowers held over glossy foliage, and it blooms continuously from early summer to frost!

Both of the two firsts of the Canadian Artists Rose series are disease resistant and have clean foliage. But perhaps the best advantage to this collection is that it has been tested by growers across Canada, proving their reliability in the harshness of our climate. They are soon to be followed by other colours including yellow, apricot and a bi-color (a rare find indeed).
